How ToolFluency is made
One carpenter from Ontario, on evenings and weekends, building a whole family platform. Here's how — and what we commit to about your data along the way.
ToolFluency is built by one person (me, Mike) on top of my full-time carpentry business. I'm a Red Seal carpenter, not a CS-trained engineer. To ship something of this scope alone, I use modern AI tools as a coding assistant — think of it as a very fast pair programmer who types the scaffolding while I design, review, test, and maintain every feature.
That's the same way a carpenter uses a nail gun. Faster, more accurate, same craftsman behind it.
The two things people mean by "AI"
How I build the product
AI-assisted coding. Happens on my laptop, not yours. No customer data is involved. Every line gets reviewed and tested before it ships.
How AI appears in the product
Almost nothing — and that's deliberate. None of the 934+ free tools call an AI service; they're plain, client-side math. The one AI-powered feature is the in-app Quick Add bar: type or speak something like "log 3 hours framing at 18 Lambton Dr" and Claude turns it into a structured record you review and confirm before it saves — opt-in, server-side, and never used to train models. No chatbot, no AI tutor.
Those two things are worth keeping separate in your head. "Built with AI assistance" is a statement about my development workflow. It's not a statement about what your kid is using.
A quick reality check
You've probably seen social videos claiming someone "built a full SaaS in 10 minutes with AI." Those are real for tiny single-purpose tools — a calculator, a to-do list, a landing page. For a full product — real auth, Stripe billing, a kid-safe zone, 934+ working tools, security rules, multiple pricing tiers, cloud sync — AI lets one person ship what used to need a team. It's a fast pair programmer, not magic. I've been at this part-full-time alongside carpentry for over a year and I'm not close to done.
When AI features do get added
Eventually there will be AI-assisted features — adaptive math difficulty, accessibility helpers, maybe a writing assistant for older kids. When that happens, here's how they'll work:
- Off by default. AI features will be a toggle you turn on, per kid.
- Clearly labeled. Any tool that calls an AI service will have a visible AI badge.
- Zero-retention APIs. We use AI providers with zero-retention settings so your kid's inputs aren't stored or used to train models.
- One-click disable. Disable all AI platform-wide from Family settings and everything reverts to deterministic behaviour.
What we commit to, regardless
- Your family's data isn't sold or licensed to third parties.
- Any AI-assisted feature will be opt-in, labeled, and disableable.
- If the policy changes, this page changes first.
