Our build philosophy

How ToolFluency is made

One carpenter from Ontario, on evenings and weekends, building a whole family platform. Here's how — and what we commit to about your data along the way.

ToolFluency is built by one person (me, Mike) on top of my full-time carpentry business. I'm a Red Seal carpenter, not a CS-trained engineer. To ship something of this scope alone, I use modern AI tools as a coding assistant — think of it as a very fast pair programmer who types the scaffolding while I design, review, test, and maintain every feature.

That's the same way a carpenter uses a nail gun. Faster, more accurate, same craftsman behind it.

The two things people mean by "AI"

How I build the product

AI-assisted coding. Happens on my laptop, not yours. No customer data is involved. Every line gets reviewed and tested before it ships.

How AI appears in the product

Almost nothing right now. None of the 200+ tools currently call an AI service. There's no chatbot, no AI tutor, no LLM-powered feature live today.

Those two things are worth keeping separate in your head. "Built with AI assistance" is a statement about my development workflow. It's not a statement about what your kid is using.

A quick reality check

You've probably seen social videos claiming someone "built a full SaaS in 10 minutes with AI." Those are real for tiny single-purpose tools — a calculator, a to-do list, a landing page. For a full product — real auth, Stripe billing, a kid-safe zone, 200+ working tools, security rules, five pricing tiers, cloud sync — AI lets one person ship what used to need a team. It's a fast pair programmer, not magic. I've been at this part-full-time alongside carpentry for over a year and I'm not close to done.

When AI features do get added

Eventually there will be AI-assisted features — adaptive math difficulty, accessibility helpers, maybe a writing assistant for older kids. When that happens, here's how they'll work:

What we commit to, regardless

If anything on the site contradicts this, email me. I read every message.
