About Age Calculator
Calculate your exact age in years, months, weeks, days, hours, and seconds. See countdown to your next birthday. Free, instant, no sign-up.
How to use
- Enter your date of birth in the Date of Birth field. The calculator handles dates back to the early 1900s and forward to today, so it works for everyone from grandparents to newborns. Use the date picker or type directly in YYYY-MM-DD format.
- Leave the Calculate age on field set to today (the default) for your current age, or change it to any past or future date. This is useful for finding how old you were when an event happened or how old you will be on a milestone date like a wedding or retirement.
- Read your exact age in the hero display: years prominently shown, with months, weeks, days, hours, and minutes broken out below. The minutes counter updates whenever you change inputs, so you can see your age tick over in real time.
- Use the next birthday countdown at the bottom to see how many days remain until you turn the next age. Pair this with planning birthday gifts, scheduling celebrations, or knowing exactly when a child becomes eligible for school cutoffs (Ontario JK requires age 4 by December 31).
- Calculate age for legal milestones in Canada: drinking age (19 in Ontario, 18 in Quebec and Alberta), driving learner permit at 16, voting at 18, CPP early retirement eligibility at 60 (with permanent reduction), full CPP at 65, OAS at 65, and senior discounts that often start at 55, 60, or 65 depending on the program.
- Use the calculator for date-of-event lookups: how old your child will be when starting kindergarten, how many days you have lived through (great for milestone celebrations like 10,000 days), or calculating exact age difference between two people for family tree work.
Examples
Tracking a 10,000-day milestone
Born July 15, 1990. The calculator shows 13,074 days lived as of April 30, 2026. The 10,000-day milestone occurred on November 30, 2017 — a fun anniversary to celebrate retroactively. The next round-number milestone (15,000 days) lands on October 30, 2031.
School cutoff for a 2022 child
A child born November 8, 2022. Ontario JK requires age 4 by December 31, 2026 — the child turns 4 on November 8, 2026, so they qualify and start JK in September 2026. The calculator confirms the child will be 3 years, 9 months, 23 days at school start — typical for the youngest in their JK class.
CPP early retirement countdown
Born March 10, 1965 — the calculator shows current age of 61 years, 1 month, 20 days. Eligibility for early CPP started on the 60th birthday (March 10, 2025) with a 36% permanent reduction. Standard age 65 eligibility is March 10, 2030 — 1,410 days away.
Frequently asked questions
How is my exact age calculated?
The calculator finds the difference between your date of birth and the target date in calendar years, then carries over remainder months and days using the standard Gregorian calendar. It accounts for varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days) and leap years correctly. For someone born July 15, 1990 calculating on April 30, 2026: 35 years, 9 months, 15 days. The total milliseconds between the two dates is also broken into weeks (1,868), days (13,074), hours (313,776), and minutes (18,826,560) for the full breakdown.
How do leap years affect my age?
Leap years add February 29 every four years, with two exceptions: years divisible by 100 are not leap years unless also divisible by 400. So 2000 was a leap year, 2100 will not be, and 2400 will be. If you were born February 29 (a leapling), you only get a true birthday every four years. The calculator handles all leap year rules correctly. Across a typical 35-year lifespan, you have lived through 8 or 9 leap days depending on birth year, adding up to about 9 extra calendar days beyond a flat 35 x 365 calculation.
When can I retire in Canada based on my age?
Canada Pension Plan (CPP) eligibility starts at age 60 with a permanent 36% reduction in monthly benefits compared to age 65. Standard CPP retirement age is 65. Delaying CPP until age 70 increases benefits by 42% above the age-65 amount. Old Age Security (OAS) starts at 65 and can be deferred to age 70 for a 36% increase. The Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) is available to low-income seniors at 65. The age you can access RRSPs without penalty is 71 (mandatory conversion to RRIF or annuity). Use this calculator to see exactly how many days until each eligibility milestone.
What age can my child start school in Ontario?
Ontario JK (Junior Kindergarten) requires the child to turn 4 by December 31 of the school year. So a child born any time in calendar year 2022 starts JK in September 2026. SK starts the following year (must turn 5 by December 31). Other provinces have different cutoff dates: BC and Alberta use August 31, Quebec uses September 30. US states vary by state, with most using a September 1 cutoff for kindergarten. This calculator helps you determine exactly which school year applies to your child.
How many days, hours, and minutes have I been alive?
For a typical 35-year-old: roughly 12,783 days (35 x 365.25), 306,792 hours, 18,407,520 minutes, and over 1.1 billion seconds. Common milestones to celebrate: 10,000 days alive (about 27.4 years), 1 billion seconds (about 31.7 years), 365,000 hours (about 41.7 years). The calculator shows all of these in real time. Tracking your age in days is also useful for scientific or medical calculations where precise age matters more than approximate years.
What is my Western or Chinese zodiac sign by age?
Western zodiac signs depend on your birth month and day, not your age: Aries Mar 21-Apr 19, Taurus Apr 20-May 20, Gemini May 21-Jun 20, Cancer Jun 21-Jul 22, Leo Jul 23-Aug 22, Virgo Aug 23-Sep 22, Libra Sep 23-Oct 22, Scorpio Oct 23-Nov 21, Sagittarius Nov 22-Dec 21, Capricorn Dec 22-Jan 19, Aquarius Jan 20-Feb 18, Pisces Feb 19-Mar 20. Chinese zodiac follows a 12-year animal cycle starting from your birth year: 2026 is the Year of the Horse, 2025 was the Snake. Your animal sign repeats every 12 years (12, 24, 36, 48, 60 years old).
How do I calculate age difference between two people?
Set the older person's birth date as the date of birth and the younger person's birth date as the 'calculate age on' date. The result shows the exact age difference in years, months, days, hours, and minutes. For two siblings born March 15, 2018 and August 22, 2021: the older sibling is 3 years, 5 months, and 7 days older. This is useful for family tree work, sibling spacing decisions, or simply settling 'who is older' debates among twins or close-in-age relatives.
