Free printable RACE strategy worksheets for Grades 3-5: short original passages with a question, writing lines and an R-A-C-E checklist, a RACE organizer, rubric and anchor chart. Paste your own passage too. Model answer key included.

How to use

  1. Pick a worksheet. 'Read and respond' prints a short passage, the question, writing lines and an R-A-C-E checklist students tick as they write. 'RACE organizer' breaks the answer into three boxes: topic sentence (Restate + Answer), evidence (Cite) and explanation (Explain). 'RACE rubric' is a 4-point marking guide, and 'RACE anchor chart' is a poster with sentence starters.
  2. Choose the grade. Grade 3 passages are shorter and print with larger text and wider writing lines; Grades 4-5 passages are longer. There are opinion texts (should recess be longer?) and informational texts (why sea otters hold paws, how maple syrup is made).
  3. Choose a passage, or pick 'Paste my own passage' to use any text your class is reading. Type a title, paste the passage (leave a blank line between paragraphs) and write your question; the worksheet updates as you type.
  4. Print. 'Print worksheet' gives the student copy. For the built-in passages, 'Print answer key' prints the same sheet with a model RACE answer written on the lines, and 'Print both' puts them together. Untick 'Print in colour' for black-and-white copies.

Frequently asked questions

What does RACE stand for?

RACE is a short-answer writing strategy: Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite evidence from the text, and Explain how that evidence supports the answer. The Restate and Answer together make the topic sentence. It gives students in Grades 3-5 a repeatable structure for answering questions about what they read, and it matches what reading standards ask for: using details from the text to support an answer (CCSS RL/RI.3.1, RI.4.1, RI.5.1; Ontario Language strand on comprehension).

Are the reading passages original?

Yes. Every passage and model answer was written for ToolFluency, so you can copy them freely for your class. The informational passages stick to well-established facts (sea otters, honeybees, maple syrup, beavers, the Moon, owls), and the opinion passages take one clear side so students have something specific to restate and support.

How do I mark a RACE answer?

Print the RACE rubric. It scores each letter from 4 to 1: did the student restate the whole question, answer every part, cite evidence that actually supports the answer, and explain how the evidence proves it? That gives a total out of 16. Because the checklist on the worksheet uses the same four letters, students can check their own work before handing it in.

Can I use my own reading passage?

Yes. Choose 'Paste my own passage' from the Passage list, then type the title, paste the text and write your question. The worksheet and organizer update as you type. There is no answer key for your own passage, since only you know the answer you are looking for.
