Free Study Tools for Students

6 browser-based education tools — create flashcard decks, time your study sessions, calculate grades, analyze reading level, and polish your writing. No account, no install, free forever.

A study stack built on evidence-based learning techniques.

Every tool here runs directly in your browser — no app to install, no account to create, no subscription to manage. Students, teachers, and homeschoolers can open any tool on a school Chromebook, a shared library computer, or a personal phone and start working immediately. The goal is to put the methods that research says actually work — spaced repetition, focused timed practice, writing clarity analysis — into tools that are faster to open than any native app.

The flashcard tools are built around the same active-recall principle used by Anki and Quizlet: seeing a question, retrieving the answer from memory rather than re-reading it, and flipping to check. Research consistently shows that active recall produces stronger long-term retention than passive review. Flashcard Maker is optimized for quick card creation and manual study sessions, while Flashcard Generator focuses on building structured question-and-answer decks with shuffle and self-quiz modes. Both save locally to your browser so your decks are waiting for you on your next visit — without any server account.

The Study Timer brings the Pomodoro technique to the browser: 25-minute focused blocks separated by short breaks, with configurable intervals so you can match your own concentration span. Grade Calculator takes the anxiety out of final exam math — enter your assignment weights and current scores, then see exactly what you need on remaining work to hit your target grade. Reading Level Analyzer runs your text through three readability formulas (Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, and Coleman-Liau) and returns a grade-level score with plain-language advice on how to simplify dense passages. Essay Word Counter adds live stats — words, characters, sentences, reading time, and keyword density — without requiring a Google Docs login.

These tools are a free standalone alternative to platforms that require institutional accounts or email verification on shared devices. None of them collect student data. Everything that can be saved stays in your own browser's localStorage. If you are a teacher looking for tools that work on guest-mode Chromebooks and shared classroom devices, every tool here fits that requirement.

Frequently asked questions.

Common questions about using these free study tools, what they save, and how they compare to Anki, Quizlet, and other platforms.

Do I need an account to use these tools?
No. Every tool opens directly in your browser without any sign-in, registration, or email address. There is no account system at all. You can use any tool on a school Chromebook in Guest mode, a library computer, or a friend's device and it works the same way every time.
Are my flashcard decks saved? Will I lose them if I close the tab?
Both flashcard tools save your decks to your browser's localStorage, which persists across tab closes and browser restarts as long as you use the same browser on the same device. If you clear your browser data or switch to a different browser or device, those saves will not carry over. There is no server account holding your decks — everything stays on your own device. The Flashcard Generator also supports export, so you can download a deck as a file and re-import it elsewhere.
How do these flashcard tools compare to Anki or Quizlet?
Anki uses a spaced repetition scheduling algorithm (SM-2) that tracks how well you remember each card and shows it to you right before you would forget it — a powerful system if you are doing long-term memorization over weeks or months. Quizlet requires a free account and layers in matching games and teacher/class features. These tools are simpler and faster: open a tab, build a deck, quiz yourself with shuffle and flip — no setup, no account, no algorithm deciding when to show you cards. They are best for exam prep, quick review sessions, and shared devices where login is impractical.
Will these tools work offline?
The HTML and JavaScript that power each tool are served from ToolFluency's servers, so an internet connection is required on first load. Most modern browsers cache pages for returning visits, so if you have loaded a tool before, it may continue to work with a slow or dropped connection. For reliable offline use, native apps like Anki (which fully supports offline) are a better fit.
Are these tools suitable for kids?
Yes, with some guidance. The Flashcard Maker and Study Timer are used by students of all ages, including primary and middle school. The Reading Level Analyzer and Grade Calculator are aimed at secondary and post-secondary students. For younger learners (K–Grade 5), ToolFluency's Kids Zone has an age-appropriate curriculum for math and reading that may be a better fit than the open-ended study tools here.
What citation styles are available? Can I generate MLA or APA citations?
The current tools in this category do not include a citation generator. The Reading Level Analyzer and Essay Word Counter focus on drafting and clarity rather than citation formatting. For MLA, APA, or Chicago style citations, tools like Zotero (free, offline-capable) or Citation Machine cover that use case. A citation generator may be added to this category in a future update.
How does the Grade Calculator handle weighted grades?
You enter each assignment category (quizzes, homework, midterm, final exam) with its weight as a percentage of your total grade, then enter your score for each. The calculator multiplies each score by its weight and sums them to produce your current weighted average. You can also enter a target grade and leave one category blank — the tool will calculate the score you need on that remaining item to hit your goal. All calculation happens in the browser; no data is sent to any server.
Do these tools work on a phone or tablet?
Yes. All six tools are responsive and work on iOS and Android browsers. The flashcard tools are tap-friendly for flipping cards. The Study Timer runs in the background as long as the browser tab stays open (note that some mobile browsers pause timers when the app moves to the background — keep the tab active or use a dedicated timer app if you need background counting). The text-input tools (Reading Level Analyzer, Essay Word Counter) work best on tablet or laptop where typing longer text is comfortable.
