Free Unit Converters

Free unit converters that actually get the factors right.

17 free online converters for length, weight, temperature, volume, area, energy, speed, time, data size and more — exact international conversion factors, no sign-up.

Built on the SI system, not approximations.

Every modern conversion traces back to the seven SI base units — metre, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela. Since 2019 these are no longer defined by artifacts; the kilogram is fixed by the Planck constant, and the metre by the speed of light (the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299,792,458 of a second).

Imperial-to-metric factors are also exact, not approximations. Per the 1959 international yard and pound agreement: 1 inch = 25.4 mm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg. The numbers look messy precisely because they are exact.

Where conversions get tricky is when systems collide: a US gallon (3.785 L) is 20% smaller than a UK gallon (4.546 L), aviation uses knots because one nautical mile equals one minute of latitude, and binary KiB (1024 bytes) versus decimal KB (1000 bytes) explains why a 1 TB drive shows as 931 GB in Windows. The 17 tools below cover length, weight, temperature, volume, area, energy, speed, time, data size, time zones, cooking, Morse code and Roman numerals.

Conversion FAQs.

The questions people actually ask about unit conversion — with the exact factors, not handwaving.

Is 1 mile exactly 1.609 km?
1 international mile equals exactly 1,609.344 metres — 1.609344 km, not 1.609. Set by the 1959 international yard and pound agreement (1 yard = 0.9144 m exactly). The US survey mile (1,609.347218694 m) is only used in older land surveying.
Why are US and UK gallons different?
The US gallon is 3.785 L; the UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.546 L — about 20% larger. The US kept the older British wine gallon (231 cubic inches), while Britain redefined its gallon in 1824 as 10 pounds of water at 62 °F. UK and US miles-per-gallon figures are not interchangeable.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit by hand?
F = C × 9/5 + 32, or F = C × 1.8 + 32. Mental shortcut: double the Celsius value and add 30 (within ~1 °F across everyday weather). Reverse: C = (F − 32) × 5/9. The scales meet only at −40°: −40 °C = −40 °F.
What's the difference between KB and KiB?
1 KB = 1,000 bytes (decimal, SI). 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes (binary, IEC 80000). Hard drive makers use decimal — a "1 TB" drive is 10^12 bytes. Windows shows the binary count but still labels it "KB", so a 1 TB drive reads as ~931 GB. Linux/macOS use GiB/MiB/KiB to avoid this.
How accurate are these online converters?
Every factor is exact by international definition: 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 mile = 1,609.344 m. Arithmetic uses 64-bit IEEE 754 doubles (~15 significant digits). For legal or scientific filings, cite NIST SP 811 or the BIPM SI Brochure.
What's a knot and why don't planes use mph?
1 knot = 1 nautical mile per hour = 1.852 km/h = 1.15078 mph. One nautical mile equals one minute of latitude, so distance on a chart maps directly to angular position — no conversion required. Aircraft instruments, ATC and marine reports universally use knots for that reason.
