About Checkers for Kids

Play Checkers free online with kid-friendly visuals and move hints. Learn strategy by jumping and capturing pieces. Great for ages 5-12. No ads, no sign-up.

How to use

  1. Pick a difficulty (Easy, Medium, Hard) and a side — red traditionally moves first. Recommended for ages 5-10 (kindergarten through Grade 5). The board is the standard 8x8 with 12 pieces per side, played only on dark squares.
  2. Click one of your pieces to light up every legal diagonal move. Regular pieces move one square diagonally forward; the highlighting helps young kids learn the diagonal-only rule without explanation.
  3. When an opponent piece sits diagonally adjacent with an empty square behind it, you can jump over to capture it. The game forces capture moves when available — that's standard tournament rules and helps kids learn to scan the whole board.
  4. Chain multiple jumps in a single turn whenever each landing square sets up another capture. Big multi-jumps are the most rewarding moments of the game and a great moment for parents to high-five.
  5. Reach the opponent's back row to crown your piece as a King — kings are stacked with a second disc and can move and capture both forward and backward diagonally.
  6. Win by capturing all 12 opponent pieces or trapping them so they have no legal move. The game announces the winner and tracks games-played and games-won across the session.
  7. Strategy hint: keep your back row intact early to block opponent kings, and trade pieces when you're ahead in material. Checkers builds planning, sequencing, and consequence-thinking — peer-reviewed studies link regular play to gains in working memory for ages 6-10. Privacy-safe: no ads, no sign-up, works offline.
