About Reversi for Kids

Play Reversi free online with move hints and simple rules. Flip discs to control the most territory. Kid-friendly strategy game for ages 6-12. No ads, no sign-up.

How to use

  1. Reversi (also called Othello) starts with four discs in the center of an 8x8 board: two black, two white in a diagonal pattern. Black moves first by tournament convention. Recommended for ages 7-12 — slightly more abstract than checkers, perfect for Grades 2-6.
  2. On your turn, place a disc of your color on any highlighted square. Highlights mark every legal move — every square where your disc would sandwich at least one opponent disc in a straight line (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
  3. Every opponent disc caught between the disc you just placed and another disc of your color flips to your color immediately. A single move can flip a whole row or even multiple lines at once — those big flips are the most satisfying part of the game.
  4. If you have no legal move, your turn is automatically skipped. If neither player can move, or the board fills up, the game ends — most discs of your color wins.
  5. The game offers Easy, Medium, and Hard AI. Easy plays random legal moves, Medium maximizes flips per turn, Hard uses corner-priority and edge-stability heuristics that match how serious Othello players think.
  6. Strategy hint: corners are unflippable once placed — a single corner is worth more than ten center pieces. Avoid moves that hand the opponent access to a corner (the X-squares diagonally adjacent to corners are usually traps for younger players).
  7. Reversi builds spatial reasoning, lookahead planning, and pattern recognition — research with Grade 4-6 students links it to gains in geometry-based problem solving. Privacy-safe: no sign-up, no ads, no tracking, runs offline once loaded.
