About Connect 4 for Kids
Play Connect 4 free online — drop discs to connect four in a row. Challenge the computer or a friend. Builds strategy and pattern recognition for ages 4-12.
How to use
- Choose your opponent — Easy AI for ages 4-6 (random column choice with simple block detection), Medium for ages 7-9 (looks two moves ahead), Hard for ages 10+ (uses minimax search with center-bias heuristics).
- The board is the classic 7-column, 6-row vertical grid. Tap any column to drop your colored disc — it falls to the lowest empty cell automatically, just like the original Hasbro game.
- Take turns with your opponent. The game shows whose turn it is and highlights the column you're hovering over so younger kids don't accidentally drop in the wrong spot.
- Score four of your discs in a row — horizontally, vertically, or on either diagonal — to win the game. The winning line flashes when found so kids see exactly which four counted.
- Block your opponent's three-in-a-row threats while building your own. Watching for double threats (two ways to win on the next move) is the key skill that takes Connect 4 from luck to strategy.
- Strategy hint: the center column is mathematically the most valuable — three of the seven possible four-in-a-row lines pass through it. With perfect play, the first player wins by claiming the center on move one (proved by Victor Allis in 1988).
- Connect 4 builds spatial reasoning, planning ahead, and pattern recognition — early-childhood research links it to algebraic-thinking readiness in K-2. Privacy-safe: no sign-up, no ads, COPPA-friendly, and the game runs offline after the first load.
