About Mancala for Kids

Play Mancala free online with animated stone sowing and guided moves. Learn this ancient counting and strategy game. Perfect for ages 6-12. No ads, no sign-up.

How to use

  1. The board has 12 small pits (6 on each side) and 2 large stores (one at each end). The game starts with 4 stones in each pit — that's the standard Kalah ruleset, the most common version played in North American classrooms. Recommended for ages 6+.
  2. On your turn, tap one of the six pits on your side. The game scoops up every stone in that pit and sows them one at a time into the next pits going counter-clockwise, including your own store but skipping the opponent's.
  3. Bonus turn rule: if your last stone lands in your own store, you go again. Smart kids quickly figure out how to chain bonus turns into long runs — that's the hook that makes Mancala addictive.
  4. Capture rule: if your last stone lands in an empty pit on your side and the opposite pit (across the board) has stones, you grab both that stone and all the stones across, dropping them into your store.
  5. The round ends when one player's six pits are completely empty. The other player sweeps any remaining stones on their side into their own store. Most stones in the store wins.
  6. Strategy hint: count stones before each move so you can see exactly where your last stone will land — that's how you set up bonus turns and captures. The math involved is genuine subitizing and subtraction practice for ages 6-10.
  7. Mancala is one of the oldest known board games, with archaeological evidence dating back over 3,000 years to East Africa. It builds counting fluency, planning ahead, and number sense — privacy-safe: no sign-up, no ads, COPPA-friendly, runs offline.
