Where the money went, without a spreadsheet

Not a list of features — the actual app. Here's what getting your money sorted looks like.

Budget

Budgeting

See where the money actually went — no spreadsheet.

Set a monthly limit per category, log what you spent, and the page shows you the truth: how much is left, where it's leaking, and whether this month is on track. No formulas to maintain, no bank login to hand over — just a clear picture you can act on in a minute a day.

  • Spending by category against your own limits
  • Income, expenses, and what's left — at a glance
  • Works on your phone; entry takes seconds

Built for people who want one place, not ten apps

A lot of personal-finance apps are aimed at one thing — budgeting, or just bills, or just debt. ToolFluency Personal is for people whose actual life doesn't split that cleanly. It's built by a Red Seal carpenter in Ontario who needed a budget, a bills tracker, a debt payoff plan, and a mileage log for his side hustle — without paying five subscriptions for it.

Families
One household budget, two people keeping it.
Two adults, one combined budget. Track grocery spending, kid expenses, holidays, school fees. Share categories with a spouse on Personal Plus so you're both adding to the same picture instead of texting "did you pay the daycare invoice?". Birthdays, anniversaries, and important dates live in the same app.
Side-hustlers
A paycheque and a weekend gig, one login.
You earn a paycheque AND drive for Uber on weekends, or you've got an Etsy shop, or you tutor on the side. Track personal income/expenses on the personal side, business income/expenses separately on the business side, with one login. Mileage works for both. T4 + T2125 income lives in the same brain.
Debt-payoff focused
The exact month you'll be debt-free.
Working through credit cards, lines of credit, a car loan, maybe a student loan. The Debt Payoff planner runs avalanche or snowball methods and shows you the exact month you'll be debt-free at your current pace — plus how much sooner you'll be done if you add an extra $50 or $200/mo. Honest, no upsell.
Subscription audit-anxious
Find the charges you forgot you signed up for.
You know there are streaming services, cloud storage plans, and gym memberships you forgot you signed up for. The Subscription tracker lays them all out — annual cost, next renewal date, the "do I still use this?" gut check. Most people find $30–$80/mo they can immediately cancel. The app pays for itself in week one.
Document-keepers
The "where did I save the…" panic stops.
Insurance policies, vehicle titles, kids' health records, warranty PDFs, leases, passport photos. With Personal Plus you've got encrypted document storage so the "wait, where did I save the…" panic stops. Searchable, private, syncs to phone for when you need it on the road.
Goal-setters
Chip away at the down payment, the trip, the reno.
Saving for a house down payment, a wedding, a trip, a renovation. Build a vision board with images and target dates, set a savings goal in the budget, and chip away at it. Wishlists for birthdays and Christmas keep gift-giving sane.

Why not Mint, YNAB, EveryDollar, or just a spreadsheet?

Most people land here after using something else first. Here's our honest take on the alternatives — what they do well, where they leave you stranded, and why this one might suit you.

vs. Mint
The closest spiritual successor — without the credit-card pitch.
Mint shut down in March 2024 and migrated users to Credit Karma — which is fundamentally a credit-product marketing platform, not a budgeting tool. If you were a Mint loyalist looking for a similar lightweight categorize-and-track tool without ads and without being marketed credit cards at every screen: ToolFluency Personal Plus ($5/mo) is the closest spiritual successor with no upsells, no credit offers, no data sold to advertisers.
vs. YNAB
The lighter approach when zero-based feels like too much.
YNAB is excellent if you want a strict zero-based budgeting methodology and you're prepared to commit. It's also $14.99 USD/mo (around $20 CAD) and there's a learning curve. ToolFluency Personal is forgiving — log what you spent, see where it went, adjust the categories — without forcing you into a methodology. If YNAB feels like too much, this is the lighter approach.
vs. EveryDollar
Free monthly budget, no methodology lock-in.
EveryDollar is solid if you follow the Dave Ramsey baby-steps method, but their free tier is limited and the paid plan is around $17.99 USD/mo. ToolFluency Personal does the basic monthly budget for free and unlocks the rest (debt payoff plans, subscriptions, multi-device sync, cloud storage) at $5 CAD/mo. No methodology lock-in.
vs. a spreadsheet
The spreadsheet — plus everything around it.
A well-built Google Sheet is genuinely good for budgeting. The downsides: you can't snap a receipt into it, it doesn't track subscriptions, it doesn't help with debt payoff math, you can't share part of it with a spouse without sharing all of it. ToolFluency Personal is the spreadsheet plus everything around it, with mobile-friendly entry.
vs. your bank's app
The full picture, not just one account.
Your bank's spending insights look great but they only see what flows through that bank account. Cash spending, credit card spending on a different bank, e-Transfer income — invisible. ToolFluency Personal isn't connected to your bank (privacy reasons), so you log entries manually or paste from statements. Slower setup, full picture.
vs. five single-purpose apps
One account, one password, one place to look.
If you currently use one app for bills, one for budget, one for subscriptions, one for debt payoff, and one for documents — you're paying multiple subscriptions and managing five logins. Personal Plus ($5 CAD/mo) replaces all of those with one account, one password, one place to look.

Questions answered

Is my data really private?
Yes. Your data is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, encrypted in transit and at rest, on servers in North American regions — so it syncs securely across your devices. We don't sell, share, or mine it; the business runs on subscriptions, not your data. ToolFluency never connects to your bank, so your banking credentials never enter the picture. You can export everything as CSV, JSON, or PDF any time, and deleting your account removes it permanently.
Does it work on a spotty connection?
Mostly, yes. ToolFluency is a Progressive Web App, so once it's loaded it keeps working through dips in your connection and syncs your changes back up the moment you're online again. Add it to your home screen and it behaves like an installed app.
What ads appear in the free version?
Non-intrusive banner ads from Google AdSense appear alongside tool content. No popups, no video ads, no tracking beyond what AdSense collects for serving ads.
What's included in Personal Plus?
Personal Plus removes all ads from every tool on ToolFluency, unlocks document storage, photo albums, cloud sync across devices, and gives you priority support. One subscription covers your account on all devices.
Can I use ToolFluency on mobile?
Yes. ToolFluency is mobile-first and works great on iOS and Android browsers. You can add it to your home screen for an app-like experience.
How do I cancel Personal Plus?
Cancel anytime from your account settings in two clicks. Your Plus access continues until the end of your current billing period.
Do free tools require a login?
No. Most free tools require zero login. Create an account if you want your data to sync across devices — otherwise just use them directly.
Who's behind ToolFluency?
A Red Seal carpenter in Ontario who got tired of paying for five different apps to run his family's finances and his small carpentry business. No outside investors, no growth-at-all-costs pressure, no plans to take VC money. The whole platform — Personal, Business, Work, Kids, Games, and 3D Assets — is built and maintained by one solo developer who actually uses every part of it.
Does ToolFluency connect to my bank?
No, and that's intentional. Bank-connecting apps require you to hand over banking credentials to a third-party aggregator (Plaid, Flinks, etc.), which is a meaningful trust transaction we'd rather not ask you to make. Entries in Personal are manual or pasted-from-statement. The trade-off is a few minutes a week of entry; the upside is your bank login never leaves your bank.
Can I export my data?
Yes, any time. CSV exports for budget transactions, bills, subscriptions, debts, and mileage. PDF exports for reports. JSON for everything if you want a full backup. If you ever decide ToolFluency isn't for you, you walk away with all your data intact.
Is it really $5/mo with no surprises?
Yes. Personal Plus is $5 CAD/mo, billed monthly, cancel any time. No price increase for existing subscribers planned. No hidden tiers, no "premium" upsells, no "unlock this feature for $2 more". Pricing is what's posted; that's the whole story.
What happens to my data if I cancel?
Cancel Personal Plus and your account drops back to the free tier — you keep all your data, you just see ads again and lose access to the Plus-only features (document storage, photo albums, cross-device sync). Delete your account entirely and everything is permanently removed within 30 days. No "data we'll keep just in case" backup; gone is gone.
