About Type Hero

Free typing game for kids ages 4-12 — type falling letters and words before they reach the bottom. Three age tiers with sight words and celebrations. No ads or sign-up.

How to use

1. Pick a tier matching your child's age: Tier 1 (ages 4-5, single uppercase letters falling one at a time in a 1-lane field, no lives — pure exploration), Tier 2 (ages 6-8, real 3-4 letter sight words like 'cat', 'jump', 'red' in 2 lanes with 5 lives), or Tier 3 (ages 9-12, longer words plus short phrases in 3 lanes with 3 lives and live WPM tracking).
2. Words drift down from the top of the screen. Type them on a physical keyboard — letters appear as you type, with correct letters lighting up green and wrong ones flashing red.
3. Tier 1 only requires hitting the matching key once per falling letter — perfect for kids still learning where letters live on the keyboard. Tier 2 requires typing the whole word; Tier 3 also requires the spacebar between words in phrases.
4. Hands rest in home-row position — left fingers on A, S, D, F and right on J, K, L, semicolon, with thumbs on the spacebar. This is the same touch-typing posture taught in classroom typing programs.
5. Speed increases automatically as you type more accurately, and slows back down after a missed word. So the game self-adjusts to whatever skill level your child arrives at — no manual difficulty fiddling.
6. Streak celebrations fire at 10, 25, 50, and every 50 words after that. They're concrete reward checkpoints that keep younger kids engaged through 5-10 minute practice sessions, the sweet spot for typing-skill retention.
