About Spelling Bee

Free spelling bee game for kids — hear a word, then spell it with letter tiles. Grade-level word lists and score tracking for ages 5-12. No ads, no sign-up needed.

How to use

  1. Pick a category and difficulty from the dropdowns. Categories: Animals, Foods, Colors, Body Parts, Household. Difficulties: Easy (3-4 letters, K-Gr1), Medium (5-6 letters, Gr2), Hard (7+ letters, Gr3-Gr5).
  2. The word is spoken aloud automatically using your device's text-to-speech voice. Tap 'Say It Again' as many times as needed — repeated audio exposure is essential for kids with auditory-processing differences and English language learners.
  3. Look at the picture/emoji clue above the empty letter slots to confirm meaning. Pairing audio + visual + spelling matches the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach used in evidence-based dyslexia programs.
  4. Tap letters from the tile pool to fill the slots in order. The tool mixes 2-3 decoy letters with the real ones, so kids can't just tap-tap-tap every tile — they have to discriminate which letters belong.
  5. Hit Check Spelling when slots are full. Correct spellings light green and earn 1-3 points (more points if no hint was used). Wrong letters turn red while correct ones stay green, so kids see exactly where they went off-track.
  6. Stuck? Use the Hint button to fill in one missing letter. The tool tracks how many hints you used per word so you can see where to focus practice next.
  7. Teacher tip: research from Louisa Moats ('Speech to Print') shows that decoding (sounding out) and encoding (spelling) reinforce each other. Tap 'Say It Again' before each attempt to anchor the phoneme-grapheme link, and aim for 5-10 words per session.
