Free word search puzzles for kids — find hidden words in a letter grid with themed word sets and adjustable difficulty. Builds vocabulary for ages 5-12. No ads, no sign-up.

How to use

  1. Pick a theme: Animals, Space, Ocean, Food, Sports, or Sight Words. Sight Words uses the Dolch and Fry high-frequency lists — perfect reinforcement for K-Grade 3 readers building automatic word recognition.
  2. Pick a difficulty: Easy (8x8 grid, 6 words, only horizontal and vertical), Medium (10x10, 8 words, all 8 directions), or Hard (12x12, 10 words, all 8 directions including reverse and diagonal).
  3. Read the 'Find These Words' list on the side panel. Words are pre-loaded for each theme — about 6-10 per puzzle — and they cross-pollinate vocabulary with theme knowledge (e.g., the Space theme teaches 'orbit,' 'nebula,' 'galaxy').
  4. Click and drag (mouse) or swipe (touch) across letters in a straight line to select a word. Diagonal and reverse words appear at Medium and Hard difficulty — this trains visual scanning and left-to-right reading directionality.
  5. Found words are crossed off the list and highlighted in a unique color on the grid (8 colors rotate). The visual contrast makes overlapping words stay readable — important for kids with visual-processing differences.
  6. Watch the timer at the top. Encourage kids to beat their previous time on the same theme/difficulty rather than racing against the clock — research from Carol Dweck shows growth-mindset framing produces better long-term motivation than performance-mindset framing.
  7. Parent tip: word search reinforces orthographic mapping (the brain's word-shape recognition system) which is critical between K and Grade 3. The Reading League cites letter-pattern scanning as a key skill — and this is a fun way to practice it.
