About Word Guess

Free word guessing game for kids — guess hidden words letter by letter and fuel a rocket with correct answers. Builds vocabulary and spelling. Ages 5-12. No ads.

How to use

  1. Pick a category and difficulty: Animals, Foods, Colors, Body Parts, Household, or Sight Words; Easy (3-4 letters), Medium (5-6), or Hard (7+). Sight Words pulls from the Dolch and Fry high-frequency lists used in K-Grade 3 reading curricula.
  2. Look at the blank slots to see how long the word is. On Easy difficulty, you'll also see a category hint like 'This is an animal' or 'A common sight word' to scaffold younger readers.
  3. Tap a letter on the on-screen keyboard, or type on a physical keyboard if you have one. Correct letters fill the slots in green; wrong letters drain one fuel bar from the rocket gauge (you have 6 wrong guesses before liftoff fails).
  4. Use the Hint button if you're stuck — it reveals one letter but counts as a wrong guess. This teaches kids to hint strategically: hint early to get unstuck, hint late to save the round.
  5. Solve the word before fuel runs out and the rocket launches with a confetti celebration. Round-end points scale by difficulty: 3 points if you used 0-1 wrong guesses, 2 if 2-3, 1 if 4-5.
  6. After the round, tap the Say Word button to hear the word pronounced via text-to-speech. Hearing the word right after solving cements phoneme-grapheme correspondence — the same principle behind Orton-Gillingham reading instruction.
  7. Parent tip: pick Sight Words for K-Gr1 — the 100 most common Dolch words make up about 50% of all written English, so mastering them unlocks easier reading immediately. The rocket theme keeps motivation high for reluctant readers.
