Interior Detail: the full procedure
Declutter, vacuum, and wipe the interior top-to-bottom with the right product per material — a consistent interior result, glass last.
- Applies to: Detailers.
- Frequency: Every interior detail.
- Scope: Covers the interior workflow + product-per-material logic. Dilution/safety follow each product’s label.
What you need
- Vacuum + crevice/brush tools
- Compressed air/blower
- Microfiber + detail brushes
- Interior cleaner + material-specific protectants
The procedure, step by step
- Declutter and check — Remove trash and personal items (note valuables per intake), and remove floor mats.
- Blow out and vacuum — Blow out vents and crevices, then vacuum seats, carpets, and crevices thoroughly.
- Clean surfaces top-to-bottom — Work high-to-low — headliner with care, then dash, console, door panels, vents — so loosened dust falls to areas not yet cleaned (and ultimately the floor).
- Match product to material — Use the right cleaner/conditioner for each surface (leather vs vinyl/plastic vs fabric), spray onto the cloth/brush, agitate, and wipe — don’t over-wet electronics.
- Detail the details — Brush vents, seams, buttons, and cup holders; clean door jambs.
- Glass last — Finish with interior glass (its own SOP) so cleaning overspray doesn’t re-soil it.
Quality check before you finish
- Decluttered; mats out; valuables noted.
- Vents blown; fully vacuumed.
- Surfaces cleaned top-to-bottom.
- Right product per material; not over-wet.
- Vents/seams/jambs detailed.
- Glass done last.
This is a free, source-anchored standard operating procedure (SOP) you can print and hand to staff. It documents the work sequence for a Auto Detailing business — not safety or regulatory rulings, which defer to the cited authorities, the applicable code, and your own health-and-safety plan. Open the tool above to print it, toggle ink-saver, or (with a free ToolFluency Business account) edit it to match your own workflow.

About Free Interior Detailing SOP
Free printable interior detail SOP: declutter, blow out and vacuum, wipe surfaces top-to-bottom, clean vents and crevices, and condition by material — a consistent interior result.
How to use
- Read the full procedure top to bottom before the work — the SOP runs in order and each step builds on the last.
- Toggle Ink-saver (black & white) for a cheaper mono print for the binder; leave it off for the full-color version.
- Click Print SOP to print or save as PDF. Print one per crew, laminate it for the binder, or attach it to the job in your scheduling system.
- Train new hires on it and have staff sign off. Found something out of date? Use the feedback link — flagged SOPs are re-researched against the source list.
Frequently asked questions
What is the interior detailing order?
Remove trash and personal items, blow out and vacuum (seats, carpets, crevices), then clean surfaces top-to-bottom (headliner with care, dash, console, door panels, vents), and condition each surface with the right product for the material (leather vs plastic vs cloth). Glass is done last.
Why work top-to-bottom inside?
So dust and debris knocked loose from upper surfaces fall onto areas not yet cleaned (and ultimately the floor, which is vacuumed/cleaned last) — the same logic as cleaning a room, avoiding re-cleaning.
