Interior & Light Detail: the full procedure
Vacuum, wipe, and freshen the interior to the owner’s standard for attended wash and light-detail packages.
- Applies to: Detail attendants
- Frequency: Per interior/detail package
- Scope: Covers the interior cleaning sequence for light-detail and attended packages. Interior cleaners, protectants, and odor products defer to the product label/SDS; this SOP owns the order, coverage, and consistency of the work.
What you need
- Vacuum with crevice and brush tools
- Interior microfiber towels
- All-purpose interior cleaner (per label)
- Glass cleaner and glass towel
- Soft detail brush
- Trash bag
The procedure, step by step
- Remove trash and customer items first — Clear obvious trash, then set aside any personal belongings in plain view (or hand to the customer) — never discard or relocate valuables.
- Vacuum top-down, front to back — Vacuum seats, then floor mats removed and shaken, then carpets and crevices, finishing with the trunk if the package includes it.
- Wipe hard surfaces — Wipe dash, console, door panels, and cupholders with interior cleaner on the towel (not sprayed onto electronics), using a detail brush for vents and seams.
- Clean interior glass — Clean all interior glass and the rear-view mirror with glass cleaner on the towel, checking for haze from the inside angle.
- Apply protectant per package (if included) — Apply interior dressing only where the package specifies, buffed to a low sheen — never on the steering wheel, pedals, or driver touchpoints.
- Reset mats and controls — Replace mats squarely, return seats and mirrors toward their original position, and remove any tools left in the cabin.
- Final cabin check — Open all doors, scan for missed spots and streaks in good light, and confirm no towels or trash remain.

Frequently asked questions
What’s the correct interior cleaning order?
Remove trash and protect customer belongings first, then vacuum top-down and front-to-back, wipe hard surfaces, clean interior glass, and apply protectant only where the package specifies. Working in this order avoids re-soiling cleaned areas. Cleaner and protectant selection always defers to the product label and SDS.
Where should interior protectant never be applied?
Keep protectant off the steering wheel, pedals, and any driver touchpoint, because a slick surface there is a safety hazard. Apply it only to the surfaces the package calls for and buff to a low sheen. Always follow the product’s label and SDS for approved surfaces.
