Repair & Part Replacement: the full procedure
Perform the authorized repair to OEM standard with the correct parts, torque specs, and documentation.
- Applies to: ASE-certified technician
- Frequency: Every authorized repair
- Scope: Covers the repair workflow, parts verification, and documentation. Lifting/support, refrigerant work, and fluid handling DEFER to OEM service information, ASE-certified judgment, EPA Section 609 (A/C), and EPA/RCRA fluid rules under the safety plan.
What you need
- OEM service/torque specs
- Calibrated torque wrench
- Correct replacement part(s)
- Drip pans/spill kit
- Hand/power tools
- Threadlocker/fasteners per spec
The procedure, step by step
- Confirm authorization — Verify the signed estimate covers exactly this repair before opening anything; if scope changed, re-authorize first.
- Verify the part — Match the new part to the OEM part number / application; inspect for damage and confirm it’s the right revision.
- Set up containment — Position drip pans and spill kit before disconnecting any fluid lines; capture fluids for proper disposal.
- Remove and replace per OEM — Follow the OEM removal/installation procedure, torque sequence, and specifications using a calibrated torque wrench.
- Defer regulated steps — Any A/C component requiring recovery/recharge goes to a Section 609-certified tech; lifting follows the safe-work-area SOP; captured fluids handled per EPA/RCRA.
- Reset and relearn — Perform any required calibrations, relearns, or code clears specified by the OEM after installation.
- Retain old parts — Bag and keep the replaced part for the customer/warranty as required by state repair law.
- Document the work — Record part numbers, torque values, fluids replaced, and any relearns for the invoice and warranty record.

- Fluid containment in place before any line is opened.
- OEM torque specs and sequence followed with a calibrated wrench.
- Required calibrations/relearns completed.
- Replaced part retained for the customer per state law.
- Part numbers, torque, and fluids documented for invoice/warranty.

About Free Repair & Part Replacement SOP
Free printable SOP for mobile mechanic repairs: verify the part, follow OEM torque specs, contain fluids, and document every job for warranty.
How to use
- Read the full procedure top to bottom before the work — the SOP runs in order and each step builds on the last.
- Toggle Ink-saver (black & white) for a cheaper mono print for the binder; leave it off for the full-color version.
- Click Print SOP to print or save as PDF. Print one per crew, laminate it for the binder, or attach it to the job in your scheduling system.
- Train new hires on it and have staff sign off. Found something out of date? Use the feedback link — flagged SOPs are re-researched against the source list.
Frequently asked questions
Can the tech expand the repair if they find another problem mid-job?
Not without re-authorization. Many state repair laws require customer approval — and limit the final bill to roughly the authorized estimate plus a small overage (commonly 10%). New scope means a new or revised authorization before the extra work is done.
Why retain the old parts?
Several state repair laws entitle the customer to their replaced parts, and keeping them supports warranty and dispute resolution. Torque-to-spec with a calibrated wrench per OEM service information is an ASE-certified technician’s responsibility — never "good and tight."
