Beard Trim & Line-Up: the full procedure
A shape-to-face beard service that defines the cheek and neck lines, outlines the edges, and trims to a uniform length.
- Applies to: Barber.
- Frequency: Every beard trim or line-up service.
- Scope: Covers shaping, lining, and length trimming with clipper/trimmer. Any nick or skin reaction defers to medical care, and razor lining follows the shave SOP.
What you need
- Trimmer / edger
- Clipper with guards
- Beard comb
- Scissors
- Skin-tone marking pencil
The procedure, step by step
- Assess face & beard — Read the client’s face shape and beard density to plan lines that flatter — curved cheek lines soften angular faces, straighter lines add structure to round faces.
- Comb & inspect — Comb the beard down on a clean, dry beard so the natural shape and stray hairs are visible before cutting.
- Set the length — Trim to the agreed length with a guarded clipper or scissor-over-comb, working uniformly so the beard is even.
- Define the cheek line — Establish the cheek line from sideburn to mustache, removing strays above it; mark lightly with a skin-tone pencil if needed.
- Define the neck line — Place the neckline about two finger-widths (roughly 1–1.5 in) above the Adam’s apple with a gentle upward curve — not too high, not too round.
- Outline the edges — Clean the outline along cheeks, jaw, and neck working outward from center, keeping both sides matched.
- Final symmetry check — View head-on in the mirror, confirm lines are even, and detail any remaining strays.
Quality check before you finish
- Neckline ~1–1.5 in above the Adam’s apple, gentle curve.
- Cheek line suits the client’s face shape.
- Both sides symmetrical head-on.
- Beard length uniform throughout.
- Mustache and lip line clean and even.
- No hard "drawn-on" pencil marks left behind.
- Outline crisp without over-thinning the beard.

Frequently asked questions
How high should the beard neckline go?
About two finger-widths (1–1.5 in) above the Adam’s apple with a gentle upward curve — higher reads unnatural and too round looks unfinished.
Curved or straight cheek line?
Match the face — a softer curved line flatters angular faces, while a straighter, more defined line adds structure to rounder faces.
