Color & Chemical Service: the full procedure
The application and processing workflow for color and chemical services — formulas, timing, and safety deferred to the manufacturer and state board.
- Applies to: Stylists performing color/chemical services.
- Frequency: Every color/chemical service.
- Scope: Covers the application workflow only. Developer ratios, processing times, patch-test timing, and chemical-service safety follow the product manufacturer + your state board of cosmetology.
What you need
- Color bowl/brush or applicator
- Sectioning clips
- Gloves + cape (per safety plan)
- Timer
The procedure, step by step
- Confirm consultation and patch test — Reconfirm the agreed result and that any required patch/predisposition test was done per the manufacturer + state board.
- Formulate — Mix the formula per the manufacturer’s directions (ratios/developer per their instructions). Do a strand test where indicated.
- Protect and section — Drape and glove up, then part into clean working sections.
- Apply methodically — Apply in a consistent order (e.g. resistant/regrowth areas first as the formula requires), keeping sections clean and coverage even.
- Process and monitor — Time and monitor processing per the manufacturer’s directions — do not eyeball critical timing.
- Rinse, tone, finish — Rinse thoroughly, tone/neutralize as needed, condition, and move to finishing. Record the formula on the client card.
Quality check before you finish
- Consultation + patch-test status confirmed.
- Formula mixed per manufacturer; strand test if indicated.
- Client protected; sections clean.
- Applied evenly in correct order.
- Processed/timed per manufacturer.
- Rinsed/toned/finished; formula recorded.
This is a free, source-anchored standard operating procedure (SOP) you can print and hand to staff. It documents the work sequence for a Hair Salon business — not safety or regulatory rulings, which defer to the cited authorities, the applicable code, and your own health-and-safety plan. Frequently asked questions
What is the color service workflow?
Confirm the consultation and patch-test status, formulate, protect the client, section and apply methodically, process and monitor, then rinse, tone, and finish. Specific developer ratios, processing times, and patch-test timing follow the product manufacturer; chemical-service safety follows your safety plan and state board.
Does this SOP include color formulas or timing?
No — those are product- and client-specific. The SOP standardizes the application workflow (consultation check, sectioning, methodical application, monitoring, rinse/tone). Formulas, developer ratios, processing times, and patch tests follow the manufacturer’s instructions and your state board.
