New Stylist Onboarding: the full procedure
A phased first-weeks onboarding so a new stylist or assistant reaches the salon’s standard fast.
- Applies to: Owner, manager, or the experienced stylist doing the training.
- Frequency: Each new hire.
- Scope: Covers operational onboarding + training. The other SOPs in this manual are the training curriculum — the trainer hands them over, teaches each, and signs off when the new hire can do it your way. Licensing and employment-law/classification specifics follow your local law / advisor.
What you need
- Welcome pack / house rules
- The core service + sanitation SOPs
- Assigned buddy
The procedure, step by step
- Pre-start welcome pack — Send house rules and key info before day one, gather their paperwork, and prep their station/access. Confirm licensing.
- Day 1: buddy + tour — Assign a buddy, tour the salon, and walk policies, systems (booking/POS), and daily duties.
- Week 1: show the ropes — Walk the core service and sanitation SOPs; have them shadow, then perform under supervision with feedback.
- Gradual independence — Move into the salon-specific workflow with decreasing supervision through the first month.
- Probationary reviews — Hold review meetings (e.g. weekly, then 30/60/90) to confirm they’re meeting the standard and feel supported.
Quality check before you finish
- Welcome pack sent; paperwork + station ready; license confirmed.
- Day 1 buddy, tour, systems covered.
- Core SOPs walked; shadow then supervised.
- Gradual independence over month 1.
- Probationary reviews scheduled.
This is a free, source-anchored standard operating procedure (SOP) you can print and hand to staff. It documents the work sequence for a Hair Salon business — not safety or regulatory rulings, which defer to the cited authorities, the applicable code, and your own health-and-safety plan. Open the tool above to print it, toggle ink-saver, or (with a free ToolFluency Business account) edit it to match your own workflow.

Frequently asked questions
How do you onboard a new stylist?
Cover salon standards, policies, and systems (booking/POS), walk the core service and sanitation SOPs, have them shadow and then work supervised with feedback, and check in through a probation period. Confirm licensing and any required certifications up front.
Why onboard with SOPs?
SOP-based onboarding gets a new stylist or assistant to your salon’s standard consistently and fast, and makes expectations clear — instead of hoping they pick it up by watching.
