Electrician & Apprentice Onboarding: the full procedure

Bring new electricians and apprentices up to the company's standard quickly and verify they can run jobs the owner's way.

What you need

The procedure, step by step

  1. Verify credentials — Confirm and copy the new hire's license/registration level, and confirm apprentices' supervision requirements before any field work.
  2. Complete employment paperwork — Handle hiring paperwork, tax forms, and emergency contacts before the first job.
  3. Issue the SOP manual and safety plan — Walk the new hire through this manual and the written safety plan; have them acknowledge in writing.
  4. Train on tools and company process — Review the booking, estimate, work order, and invoicing tools they'll use daily.
  5. Ride-along under supervision — Run several jobs with the new hire under direct supervision to observe how they follow the field SOPs.
  6. Verify the verify-dead expectation — Confirm the new hire understands the business expectation that no circuit is worked until a qualified person verifies dead per the safety plan.
  7. Sign off competency — The lead signs off when the new hire consistently follows the SOPs, then sets a check-in schedule for the first 90 days.

Quality check before you finish

This is a free, source-anchored standard operating procedure (SOP) you can print and hand to staff. It documents the work sequence for a Electrical business — not safety or regulatory rulings, which defer to the cited authorities, the applicable code, and your own health-and-safety plan. Open the tool above to print it, toggle ink-saver, or (with a free ToolFluency Business account) edit it to match your own workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Does onboarding qualify someone to work unsupervised?
No. This SOP standardizes business onboarding and SOP training. A worker's qualified-person status and licensing are governed by their actual credentials, the safety plan, OSHA, and applicable code — apprentices work under supervision per those requirements, not because onboarding is complete.
What should new hires acknowledge in writing?
At minimum, that they have received and reviewed this SOP manual and the written safety plan, including the verify-dead expectation. Written acknowledgment creates a record that the standards were communicated, which protects both the worker and the business.
