What is a flooring operating manual?
A flooring operating manual is the written playbook an owner hands to every installer so the business runs the same way on every job, whether the owner is on site or not. Instead of relying on what is in one person’s head, the manual turns measuring, estimating, subfloor prep, acclimation, installation, and customer handling into repeatable steps anyone on the crew can follow. These 14 SOPs are organized into three pillars — The Install (the field work sequence from measure to final inspection), Prep & Safety (subfloor assessment, moisture, acclimation, and dust/cutting safety), and Business (booking, estimating, invoicing, warranty, communication, and onboarding) — so a new hire can come up to speed fast and a busy owner can delegate with confidence.
Each SOP documents how your business operates consistently — the work sequence, who signs off, and what good looks like. It does not replace product specifications. Anything involving the actual install spec, adhesive and VOC handling, subfloor moisture limits, silica and respirable dust from cutting tile or concrete, or material warranty terms defers to the manufacturer’s written installation instructions, the product label and Safety Data Sheet (SDS), OSHA (respirable crystalline silica, 29 CFR 1926.1153), and your business safety plan. When those sources conflict with anything here, they govern — the manufacturer’s instructions control the install spec and the warranty.
