Door and Opener Installation: the full procedure
The standard install sequence for a new sectional door and a UL 325 compliant opener, from old-door removal to handoff.
- Applies to: Install technicians
- Frequency: Every install job
- Scope: Covers panel assembly, track and hardware mounting, and opener installation per the manufacturer's instructions. All spring winding, cable installation, and opener force/sensor setup defer to the manufacturer's installation instructions and a trained garage door technician per the safety plan.
What you need
- Drill/driver
- Sockets and wrenches
- Level
- Ladder
- Vise grips/locking pliers
- Manufacturer install manual
The procedure, step by step
- Remove the old door safely — Disconnect the opener and remove the old door panels and hardware. Any existing spring under tension is unwound only per the manufacturer's instructions by a trained technician - defer per the safety plan.
- Set the first section and verify level — Place the bottom section in the opening, level it, and secure with temporary stops. A level bottom section is the foundation for the whole door.
- Stack sections and install hinges/rollers — Add each section in turn, installing hinges and rollers per the manufacturer's instructions. Keep the stack plumb and aligned.
- Mount vertical and horizontal tracks — Install and fasten the vertical tracks, then the horizontal tracks and rear hangers, following the manufacturer's spacing and bracket specifications.
- Install spring system - defer to trained tech — The torsion or extension spring system, winding, and safety cables are installed strictly per the manufacturer's instructions by a trained technician. This SOP does not provide winding specifics - defer per the safety plan.
- Mount the opener per manufacturer manual — Install the opener rail, motor head, and arm per the manufacturer's manual. Electrical connection and wiring defer to the manufacturer's instructions and applicable code.
- Install photo-eye sensors and set safety systems — Mount the photo-eye sensors no higher than 6 inches off the floor and set the entrapment-protection systems per the manufacturer's instructions. Force/sensor settings defer to a trained technician.
- Hand off to balance and safety testing — Once installed, proceed to the Balance and Safety-Reverse Test SOP before considering the job complete.

Frequently asked questions
Does this SOP explain how to wind the springs during install?
No. Spring winding and cable installation are deliberately omitted and deferred to the manufacturer’s installation instructions and a trained garage door technician. Torsion springs store hundreds of pounds of force, and DASMA warns that a slipped winding bar can cause catastrophic injury. The SOP documents the install sequence around the spring step but never the winding specifics.
How high should photo-eye sensors be mounted on a new install?
Manufacturers specify mounting the photo-eye sensors no higher than 6 inches off the floor so the infrared beam catches a child or pet in the door’s path. This is part of the UL 325 requirement for two independent entrapment-protection systems. Final force and sensor settings defer to the manufacturer’s instructions and a trained technician, then are verified in the balance and safety-reverse test.
