What Is a Handyman SOP Manual?
A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) manual is the written playbook that lets a handyman business run the same way no matter who shows up to the job. Instead of every repair depending on what one person remembers, an SOP spells out the sequence: how a job gets booked, how it’s scoped and estimated, how the work is performed and quality-checked, how the site is protected and cleaned, and how the customer is invoiced and asked for a review. This manual is organized into three pillars — The Job (the field workflow from scope to walkthrough), Scope & Safety (assessing the work, protecting the property, and the single most important business decision: knowing when a job must go to a licensed trade), and Business (intake, written estimates, invoicing, multi-trade sequencing, customer communication, and onboarding helpers).
Every procedure here describes workflow and business process — the order of operations and the standard the owner expects — not code rulings or trade instruction. Any task that requires a licensed trade (significant electrical, gas, structural, or plumbing beyond minor) or that raises a safety question defers to the appropriate licensed trade, the applicable building codes, and the business’s own safety plan / OSHA requirements. Recognizing those limits is not a weakness in the workflow — it is itself a core SOP. A good handyman builds trust (and avoids liability) by knowing exactly which jobs to take, which to refer, and how to hand them off cleanly.
