The procedure, step by step
- Review the safety plan for the site — Before setup, review the written safety plan for this job's hazards — heights, power lines, uneven ground, occupants. Methods come from the plan and OSHA, not this SOP.
- Walk the site for hazards — Walk the work area and note hazards to control. Flag anything that needs the safety plan's procedures before crews start.
- Stage access equipment per the manual — Position ladders and scaffold according to the equipment manual and OSHA. This SOP confirms it is done correctly per those sources — it does not define setup angles or ratings.
- Confirm PPE and materials handling — Confirm the PPE the safety plan and SDS require is on site and worn. Respirator and chemical handling defer to the product label, SDS, and OSHA.
- Protect occupants and the public — Set up barriers, signage, and clear paths so occupants and passersby stay out of the work zone, per the safety plan.
- Brief the crew — Hold a short start-of-job safety brief covering the day's hazards and controls. Reference the safety plan, not improvised rules.
- Inspect equipment daily — Inspect ladders, scaffold, and gear at the start of each day per the manual and OSHA. Remove damaged equipment from service.
