Jobsite Safety Stand-Down (Defer): the full procedure
Run a short pre-job safety scan and route any hazardous condition to the right authority instead of working through it.

- Scope: Covers spotting common jobsite hazards and stopping work to defer them. Does NOT provide safety rulings, excavation/trench procedures, gas procedures, or PPE specifications, which defer to OSHA, a licensed plumber, and the written business safety plan.

The procedure, step by step
- Read the job for obvious hazards — Before unloading, scan for water near electrical, gas odors, confined spaces, overhead lines, and unstable surfaces. Hazards spotted early are hazards avoided.
- Stop on any gas indication — If you smell or suspect gas, do not work the area. Follow the business safety plan and route to a licensed plumber/gas fitter and the utility. This is never a field judgment call.
- Defer any excavation or trench work — Digging is governed by OSHA trenching and excavation standards and requires utility locates (call 811) and a competent person. Do not enter or dig a trench outside those requirements and the safety plan.
- Wear the PPE the safety plan requires — Use the eye, hand, and other protection your plan specifies for the task. Do not substitute your own judgment for the written plan.
- Isolate energy and water before working — Confirm water is off per the Shutoff SOP and that electrical near the work is de-energized per the safety plan. Never work a live hazard to save time.
- Tag and report conditions beyond your scope — If a condition exceeds your training or authorization, stop, tag it, and escalate. Note it on the ticket and notify the office.
- Confirm safe egress and a clear path — Keep your exit and walkways clear of tools and hoses. Make sure you can get out fast if needed.
- Sign off that the scan was done — Record that the pre-job safety scan ran and list any deferred items. This documents the stand-down.
