Chemical Handling & Mixing: the full procedure
Store, transport, mix, and handle cleaning chemicals strictly by the label, SDS, and safety plan.
- Applies to: All Technicians
- Frequency: Every job involving chemicals; review at onboarding
- Scope: Covers the workflow of handling and staging chemicals safely. ALL chemical identity, dilution ratios, dwell times, mixing compatibility, PPE, and first aid defer entirely to the product label, SDS, and the business safety plan — this SOP specifies no formulas.
What you need
- SDS binder/access
- Label-specified PPE
- Sealed/labeled containers
- Measuring/dilution equipment
- Spill kit
- Eyewash/water source
The procedure, step by step
- Read the label and SDS first — Before handling any product, read its label and SDS for hazards, PPE, mixing, and first aid. This is non-negotiable and overrides any verbal instruction.
- Wear required PPE — Put on exactly the PPE the SDS requires for the product in use.
- Never mix incompatible products — Do not combine chemicals unless the label explicitly permits it; incompatible mixes can create hazardous reactions. Compatibility defers to the SDS.
- Mix to label ratio only — Dilute strictly to the label's specified ratio using proper measuring equipment — never by eye.
- Label every container — Keep all containers sealed and clearly labeled with contents; never store solution in unmarked or food containers.
- Transport secured — Secure containers upright in the vehicle to prevent spills and keep incompatible products separated.
- Handle spills per plan — Contain and clean spills using the spill kit and the procedure in the SDS and safety plan; report as required.
- Store per label — At end of day, store chemicals per label requirements away from heat, sunlight, and unauthorized access.

Frequently asked questions
What is the safe dilution ratio?
This SOP intentionally specifies no ratio. All dilution, dwell, and compatibility information defers to the product label and SDS. The correct ratio depends on the product and surface — always follow the label.
Can I mix two cleaning products to save time?
Only if the label explicitly permits it. Mixing incompatible chemicals can produce hazardous reactions. Compatibility and all mixing rules defer to the SDS and your written safety plan.
