Calculate the perfect tip for any bill. Choose a tip percentage, split between friends, and see per-person totals instantly. Free, no sign-up required.

How to use

  1. Enter your bill amount in the input field — for example, type 48.50 for a $48.50 dinner check. The calculator updates every result in real time as you type each digit, so you'll see the math change immediately.
  2. Select a tip percentage using the quick buttons (10%, 15%, 18%, 20%, 25%) or drag the slider for any custom percentage from 0% to 50%. On a $48.50 bill at 18%, the tool shows $8.73 tip and $57.23 total.
  3. If you're splitting the bill with friends, use the + and - buttons to set the number of people. Splitting that same $57.23 between 4 friends instantly shows $14.31 each — including everyone's fair share of the tip.
  4. For exceptional service, slide above 20%; for quick takeout or counter service, drop to 10-15%. The slider gives you single-percentage control instead of jumping by 5% — useful when you want exactly 17% or 22%.
  5. Round-up tips: most people prefer round dollar amounts on the total. If the calculator shows $57.23, you can manually bump the tip to land at exactly $58 or $60 — the calculator lets you preview the math before you write the final amount on the receipt.
  6. Read the results: tip amount, total bill, and per-person share (when splitting). All values update instantly with no save button — just close the tab when you're done. Nothing is sent to a server, so your bill amounts stay private.
  7. For service workers earning sub-minimum hourly wages (common in U.S. tipped industries), 18-20% is the customary baseline; in Canada and most of Europe, 10-15% covers the social expectation. Use the slider to match local norms.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip?

Standard tipping in North America is 15-20% for sit-down restaurants. 18% is the most common default. For exceptional service, 20-25% is appropriate. For takeout, 10-15% is typical. For delivery, 15-20% plus consideration for distance and weather. For bars, $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab.

How do I calculate a tip without a calculator?

For 10%, move the decimal point one place left ($45.00 → $4.50). For 20%, double that ($4.50 × 2 = $9.00). For 15%, add half of 10% to the 10% amount ($4.50 + $2.25 = $6.75). For 18%, calculate 20% and subtract a small amount.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Etiquette experts are divided, but tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct. However, most people tip on the total including tax for simplicity. The difference is usually small — on a $50 bill with 13% tax, tipping 18% pre-tax vs post-tax differs by about $1.17.
