About Hangman Game
Play Hangman free online. Guess the hidden word one letter at a time before the hangman is drawn. 500+ words across 8 categories. 3 difficulty levels. No sign-up needed.
How to use
- Pick a difficulty pill at the top of the controls panel: Easy draws from 4-6 letter words, Medium uses 6-8 letter words, and Hard uses 8-12 letter words. The word is chosen at random from the active difficulty pool across 8 categories — Animals, Countries, Food, Movies, Sports, Science, Occupations, and Objects.
- Read the category badge displayed above the blanks before your first guess. Knowing the word is, say, a country immediately rules out half the dictionary and tells you to expect common geographic letter patterns (vowel-heavy, ending in -A or -AND, etc.).
- Guess letters by clicking the on-screen keyboard or pressing keys on your physical keyboard (A-Z). Correct letters fill in every position they appear. Wrong letters draw the next body part of the hangman figure: head, body, left arm, right arm, left leg, right leg — six wrong guesses and the game ends.
- Start with the most common English letters in this order: E, T, A, O, I, N, S, H, R. These appear in roughly 70% of English words, so the first 5-6 guesses should crack open most word patterns regardless of category.
- Once you have a partial word, look for letter pattern shortcuts: a Q is almost always followed by a U; -ING and -ED are common endings; double letters (TT, LL, EE, OO) frequently sit in the middle; words rarely start with X or Z. Use revealed letters as anchors to test specific guesses.
- Avoid wasting guesses on rare letters early — J, Q, X, and Z together appear in less than 1% of common words. Save them for confirmation moves once you suspect a specific word. Vowels are usually safe early picks since most words contain at least one of A, E, I, O, U.
- Win by revealing every letter before the figure is fully drawn. Press New Game to play another round; your stats track wins, losses, current streak, and win percentage so you can chase a personal best. Switch difficulty or category any time between rounds.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Hangman?
A secret word is chosen at random from one of eight categories: Animals, Countries, Food, Movies, Sports, Science, Occupations, and Objects. The word is displayed as blank underscores. You guess one letter at a time by clicking the on-screen keyboard or pressing a key on your physical keyboard. If the letter appears in the word, all instances are revealed. If not, a body part is drawn on the hangman figure. You win by guessing all letters before the figure is complete.
How many wrong guesses do I get?
You get exactly 6 wrong guesses. Each wrong guess adds a body part to the hangman: first the head, then the body, left arm, right arm, left leg, and finally the right leg. After the 6th wrong guess the game is over and the hidden word is revealed.
What categories are available?
There are 8 word categories: Animals, Countries, Food, Movies, Sports, Science, Occupations, and Objects. The category is displayed as a hint during the game to help narrow down your guesses. The database contains over 500 words across all categories.
What is the best strategy for Hangman?
Start by guessing the most common letters in English: E, A, R, I, O, T, N, and S. These letters appear in the majority of English words. Once you have a few letters revealed, use the category hint and the word's pattern to make educated guesses. Avoid guessing uncommon letters like X, Z, Q, or J early on unless the pattern strongly suggests them.
Can I use my physical keyboard?
Yes — you can click the on-screen letter buttons or simply press any letter key on your physical keyboard. Both input methods work the same way. Used letters are highlighted in green (correct) or dimmed (wrong) so you can easily track your guesses.
