About Type Hero
Play Type Hero free online. Type falling words before they reach the bottom to score points and build combos. Track WPM, accuracy, and survive waves of words.
How to use
- Words fall from the top of the screen at varying speeds — start typing any visible word to lock onto it. As soon as you begin typing the correct letters, the word highlights to show your progress. Focus on the words closest to the bottom first, since those are about to hit the danger zone and cost you a life if they are not completed in time.
- Complete each word before it reaches the hit zone at the bottom of the screen. Accuracy matters: mistyped characters break your current combo and waste precious time. If you start typing the wrong word, simply start typing a different one — the game automatically switches to the word that matches your input. This means you never need to press a cancel button.
- Build combos by typing consecutive words correctly without mistakes. Each successful word increases your combo multiplier, which applies a bonus to your score. A 5x combo means each word is worth five times its base points. Combos reset when you mistype or let a word reach the bottom, so consistency is rewarded more than raw speed. Focus on accuracy first and let speed develop naturally.
- Survive as many waves as possible — each wave introduces more words that fall faster and are often longer or more complex. Early waves use short common words (3-5 letters) to let you warm up, while later waves include longer vocabulary that tests both your typing speed and your ability to spell accurately under pressure. Track your WPM and accuracy across sessions to measure your improvement over time.
Frequently asked questions
What is Type Hero?
Type Hero is an arcade-style typing game where words fall from the top of the screen and you must type each one correctly before it reaches the danger zone at the bottom. It combines the fast-paced action of a falling-block game with touch-typing practice, making it both entertaining and educational. The game features a wave system that progressively increases difficulty by spawning words faster, using longer words, and sometimes introducing multiple words simultaneously. A live HUD tracks your score, combo multiplier, words per minute (WPM), and accuracy percentage throughout the game.
Does it track my typing speed?
Yes — the game displays real-time statistics during play including your words per minute (WPM), accuracy percentage, current score, combo multiplier, and wave number. WPM measures how many standard five-character words you are typing per minute, which is the universal standard for typing speed measurement. Accuracy shows the percentage of keystrokes that were correct. After a game ends, you can review your final stats to track improvement over time. Average typists range from 40-60 WPM, while experienced typists reach 80-100+ WPM.
How does the combo system work?
Every time you correctly type a word without any mistakes, your combo counter increases by one. The combo multiplier directly affects your score — a 3x combo means each word is worth 3 times its base points, a 10x combo means 10 times. The combo resets to 1x whenever you mistype a character or let a word reach the bottom of the screen. This system rewards consistency and accuracy over raw speed. Maintaining a high combo through an entire wave can result in scores many times higher than simply typing fast with frequent errors.
Will Type Hero actually improve my typing speed?
Yes — typing games are one of the most effective ways to improve typing speed because they provide immediate feedback and motivation through scoring. Unlike traditional typing tutors that can feel repetitive, Type Hero's arcade format creates time pressure that pushes you to type faster while the accuracy tracking ensures you do not develop sloppy habits. Research on motor skill acquisition shows that practice under mild time pressure (not so much that you panic, but enough to push beyond your comfort zone) produces faster skill development than untimed practice alone.
What is a good WPM score?
Typing speed varies widely depending on experience and profession. The average person types around 40 WPM. Office workers typically range from 50-70 WPM. Proficient touch typists reach 80-100 WPM. Professional transcriptionists and programmers often exceed 100 WPM. Competitive speed typists can reach 150-200+ WPM in burst tests. For Type Hero specifically, scoring above 60 WPM with 95%+ accuracy will get you through most waves comfortably. The game becomes truly challenging above wave 10, where even 80+ WPM typists will be pressed to keep up.
What are some tips for improving at Type Hero?
Focus on accuracy first — a broken combo from a single mistyped letter costs more points than typing slightly slower. Keep your eyes on the screen, not the keyboard; this is the fundamental principle of touch typing. Prioritize words closest to the bottom of the screen, as losing a word costs a life. For longer words, do not rush through them letter-by-letter — read the full word first, then type it in a single fluid motion. Practice the home row position (fingers on ASDF and JKL;) so your hands can reach all keys efficiently without looking down.
