About Free Printable Farkle Rules

A Farkle is any roll, first roll or re-roll, that contains no scoring dice or combinations. You lose your whole turn total for that turn and the dice pass on, but points already banked on the pad are not touched.

On each turn you roll, set aside scoring dice and decide whether to bank your points or risk them on another roll, and the first player to reach 10,000 points triggers a final round. A game takes about 20 to 30 minutes. The full printable rules sheet, with dice diagrams for every scoring combination, is on this page.

How to play Farkle

  1. Give every player a row on the score pad starting at 0. Pick a first player, for example by having everyone roll one die with the highest going first, and play clockwise.
  2. On your turn, roll all six dice. You must set aside at least one scoring die (single 1s, single 5s or a scoring combination) and add its points to your turn total.
  3. Then choose: bank your turn total onto the score pad and pass the dice, or re-roll the remaining dice to try for more. You can keep some scoring dice and re-roll others, but every roll must keep at least one.
  4. If a roll shows no scoring dice at all, that is a Farkle. Your turn total drops to 0 and the turn passes, but your banked score is safe.
  5. If all six dice end up set aside as scoring in one turn, you have Hot Dice: pick up all six and keep rolling, adding to the same turn total. There is no limit on Hot Dice in a turn.
  6. Each combination must come from a single roll. Two 5s kept earlier plus a third 5 rolled later score 150 as three single 5s, not 500.
  7. The first player to reach 10,000 banked points triggers the final round. Every other player gets one last turn to beat that score, and the highest banked total wins.

Strategy tips
  • You do not have to keep every scoring die. From a roll of 1-5-2-3-4-4, keeping just the 1 and re-rolling five dice is often better than keeping the 1 and the 5 and rolling four.
  • The fewer dice you roll, the more likely a Farkle. With one or two dice left, banking is usually the smart play unless you are far behind.
  • Check for three pairs and the straight before picking out single 1s and 5s. Both are worth 1,500 and give you Hot Dice.
  • A single 5 is only worth 50. Leaving it in the dice to re-roll can be worth more than setting it aside.
  • Play more aggressively in the final round if you are behind. Banking a modest score does not help if it cannot beat the leader.
  • Agree on house values for straights, three pairs and four of a kind before the first roll so nobody argues mid-game.
Example: one turn
You roll 1-1-1-5-3-4. You keep the three 1s (1,000) and the 5 (50), so your turn total is 1,050 with two dice left. You re-roll and get 1-5: both score (100 + 50), making 1,200, and all six dice are now set aside, so you have Hot Dice. You can bank 1,200 now, or roll all six again. If that next roll scores nothing, you Farkle and the 1,200 is lost.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Farkle?

A Farkle is any roll, first roll or re-roll, that contains no scoring dice or combinations. You lose your whole turn total for that turn and the dice pass on, but points already banked on the pad are not touched.

Can you combine dice from different rolls to make three of a kind?

No. Every scoring combination must be made in a single roll. If you set aside two 5s and then roll a third 5, you score 150 for three single 5s, not 500.

Do you have to keep all the scoring dice you roll?

No. You must keep at least one scoring die before re-rolling, but you choose which ones. Many players keep a single 1 and re-roll the rest for a better chance at bigger combinations.

How much is a straight worth in Farkle?

This sheet scores 1-2-3-4-5-6 as 1,500. Published rule sets vary between 1,000, 1,500 and 3,000, so agree on the value before you start.

Do you need a minimum score to get on the board?

Not in the basic rules. A common variant requires 500 (sometimes 1,000) points in a single turn before you can bank anything, so agree on it before the first roll.

Is there a penalty for three Farkles in a row?

It is an optional rule. Three Farkles in a row on your own turns deducts 500 or 1,000 points from your banked score, and some published rules use 1,000.

What happens after someone reaches 10,000?

Every other player gets one final turn to beat the leader's banked score. The highest banked total after that round wins, and if nobody passes the leader, the leader wins.
