Final Quality Check: the full procedure
Inspect every completed item against the standard before the customer ever sees it, so nothing leaves unfinished.
- Applies to: Handyman or lead before the customer walkthrough.
- Frequency: End of every job, before walkthrough.
- Scope: Covers self-inspection of completed handyman-scope work. Does not certify code compliance for regulated trades, which is the referred trade’s and inspector’s responsibility.
What you need
- Job checklist
- Level
- Flashlight
- The approved scope
- Phone camera for after-photos
The procedure, step by step
- Re-walk against the scope — Check off each scoped item as done; nothing booked should be missing.
- Test every function — Operate each fixture, door, drawer, or mount you touched — twice.
- Inspect the finish up close — Look for proud fasteners, gaps, drips, uneven caulk, or missed touch-ups under good light.
- Check level and alignment — Verify anything mounted or hung reads level and aligns with adjacent features.
- Look for collateral marks — Scan walls, floors, and fixtures for scuffs or debris created during the work.
- Take after-photos — Photograph completed work for the job record and for review/marketing use.
- Fix it before they see it — Correct any defect now — a customer who finds it first erodes trust even if you’d have caught it.
- Confirm cleanup is ready — Verify the area is staged for the cleanup SOP and final walkthrough.

- No new scuffs or marks left on the property.
- After-photos captured.
- Defects fixed before customer sees them.
This is a free, source-anchored standard operating procedure (SOP) you can print and hand to staff. It documents the work sequence for a Handyman business — not safety or regulatory rulings, which defer to the cited authorities, the applicable code, and your own health-and-safety plan. Open the tool above to print it, toggle ink-saver, or (with a free ToolFluency Business account) edit it to match your own workflow.

How to use

- Toggle Ink-saver (black & white) for a cheaper mono print for the binder; leave it off for the full-color version.
- Click Print SOP to print or save as PDF. Print one per crew, laminate it for the binder, or attach it to the job in your scheduling system.
- Train new hires on it and have staff sign off. Found something out of date? Use the feedback link — flagged SOPs are re-researched against the source list.
Frequently asked questions
Why inspect before the customer instead of with them?
Catching and fixing a defect before the walkthrough preserves the customer’s confidence in your work; a flaw they spot first sticks in their memory even after you fix it. Your own quality check is your safety net. The customer walkthrough should confirm good work, not discover problems.
Does my quality check confirm code compliance?
No. Your check confirms the handyman-scope work is complete, functional, and clean to your standard — it does not certify code compliance for regulated trades. Any licensed-trade work is verified by that trade and, where required, a permit inspector. Keep those responsibilities separate.
