How to use

Where did Lorem Ipsum actually come from?
It was excavated from Cicero's 'De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum' (On the Ends of Goods and Evils), a philosophical treatise written around 45 BC about the highest good and the worst evil. The famous opening 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit' is a corruption of section 1.10.32, which originally reads 'Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, consectetur, adipisci velit.' Loosely: 'There is no one who loves pain itself.' A 16th-century printer scrambled the text to make a type specimen, and the scrambled version is what designers have been pasting ever since.
Why use Lorem Ipsum instead of real text?
Real copy distracts. When stakeholders see actual sentences they read them, react to the meaning, and start critiquing the writing instead of the layout. Lorem Ipsum is recognizably nonsense, so the eye treats it as visual texture and focuses on typography, spacing, hierarchy, line length, and color. The Latin-derived word lengths and letter frequencies also approximate Western European languages well enough that the design rhythm is realistic — unlike, say, repeating 'asdf asdf asdf' which has no rhythmic variation.
Are there themed alternatives to Lorem Ipsum?
Yes — Bacon Ipsum (meat-themed), Hipster Ipsum (artisanal-themed), Cupcake Ipsum (dessert-themed), Cat Ipsum, Pirate Ipsum, and Veggie Ipsum all exist. They are fun for personality-driven projects but break the original purpose: stakeholders end up reading and reacting to the copy. For serious design review, classic Latin Lorem Ipsum is best because the foreign-looking text genuinely fades into the background. Save the themed versions for personal portfolio mockups and demo pages.
How long is a 'paragraph' or 'sentence' in this generator?
Each generated paragraph contains 3 to 6 sentences. Each sentence is 8 to 19 words. So an average paragraph runs roughly 50 to 90 words. The randomization means consecutive paragraphs vary in length, which produces more realistic visual rhythm than fixed-length blocks. If you need an exact word count for a specific field (a 50-word product summary, a 150-word meta description), generate Words mode and adjust the count directly.
Does Lorem Ipsum mess with SEO?
Only if you ship it. Google indexes whatever text is in the live HTML, so a launched page with Lorem Ipsum body copy will rank for 'lorem ipsum' (badly) and offer no relevance signal for the topic the page should cover. Worse, search consoles flag the page as low-quality content. The fix is workflow discipline: track every page that contains placeholder, replace before deploying to production, and run a final string search for 'lorem ipsum' across your build output as part of the pre-launch checklist.
When should I switch from placeholder to real copy?
As early as possible — ideally during the wireframe-to-mockup transition. Real copy frequently breaks designs because actual headlines run longer than the 8-word Lorem stub, real product names contain awkward punctuation, and real testimonials are sometimes three sentences when the design only allowed two lines. Designing with even rough draft copy catches these problems while there is still time to adjust the layout. Lorem Ipsum is fine for the first wireframe pass, but anything past that should use the project's actual content where possible.
Is Lorem Ipsum copyrighted?
No. The original Cicero text is over 2,000 years old and firmly in the public domain. The scrambled Lorem Ipsum version, derived from it in the 1500s, is also long out of any copyright period. You can use it commercially, modify it, redistribute it, build it into your own generators, or print it on a T-shirt. The output of this generator carries no licensing restrictions whatsoever.
