About Word Scramble Generator

Generate printable word scramble worksheets. Custom word lists, optional first-letter hints, blank or shown answers, separate answer key. Free, no sign-up.

How to use

  1. Type or paste your word list — one word per line. The default list is a fall theme; replace it with vocabulary, spelling words, or any topic you're studying.
  2. Set the sheet title (printed at the top), then choose the answer column style: Blank lines for write-in worksheets, Hidden for a separate answer key, or Shown for hint/preview mode.
  3. Toggle 'Keep first letter' to lower difficulty — first letters stay in place, only the rest is scrambled. Helpful for younger learners.
  4. Toggle 'Reject scrambles that match the original' to force a different arrangement. Works for words with 3+ letters; very short words may still come out unchanged.
  5. Click Shuffle again to re-randomize. Click Print to send the printable sheet to your printer — controls and answer key (if hidden mode) are excluded from the print layout.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good word count for a worksheet?
Classroom worksheets typically use 10–20 words. Family game night or party scrambles often use 5–10 themed words around the event (wedding terms, holiday vocabulary, names of guests). For ESL/spelling practice, 15–25 words work well — enough to be meaningful practice but short enough to finish in 5–10 minutes.
Why do my scrambles sometimes look like the original?
For 2-letter words there are only 2 possible arrangements, one of which is the original. For 3-letter words there are 6 arrangements with 1 matching the original (16% chance of unchanged). Enable the 'Reject scrambles that match' option — the tool retries up to 12 times before giving up and keeping the original. Words 4+ letters almost never come out unchanged.
Can I use this for ESL or vocabulary practice?
Yes — that's a primary use case. Paste your week's vocabulary list, choose Hidden answer mode for a worksheet, or Shown mode for guided practice where students see the answer below the scrambled form. Phrases like 'New Year' work too — the tool only scrambles letters within each line, so multi-word entries stay together as units.
Can I save my word lists?
Not yet — the tool doesn't have built-in saving. Keep your lists in a notes app (Notion, Apple Notes, Google Keep) and paste them in each time. The tool accepts any list with one word per line, blank lines ignored.
Is this scrambler free?
Yes — completely free, no account, no signup, no watermarks, unlimited use. All scrambling happens locally in your browser; no word list ever leaves your device. Built by a Red Seal Carpenter who got tired of paying for software that should be free.
