Go Fish is a simple family card game for 2 to 6 players, ages 4 and up, played with one standard 52-card deck. Players take turns asking each other for ranks they already hold, and the player who collects the most books (all four cards of one rank) wins. A game usually lasts 10 to 20 minutes. The full printable rules sheet, with a table layout, a turn flowchart and card diagrams, is on this page.

How to play Go Fish

  1. Deal cards face down one at a time, clockwise: 7 cards each with 2 or 3 players, or 5 cards each with 4 or more. The rest of the deck goes face down in the middle as the stock, or pond.
  2. The player to the dealer's left goes first, and play moves clockwise.
  3. On your turn, name one opponent and ask for a rank, for example "Sara, do you have any sevens?" You must already hold at least one card of that rank.
  4. If they have any, they must hand over all of them, and you ask again, either the same player or someone else.
  5. If they have none, they say "Go Fish!" and you draw the top card of the stock. If it is the rank you asked for, show it and take another turn. Otherwise keep it, and play passes to your left.
  6. When you collect all four cards of a rank, that is a book. Show it and lay it face up in front of you. Each book is worth 1 point.
  7. If your hand runs out, on your next turn draw one card from the stock and ask for that rank. If the stock is also empty, you are out and the others play on.
  8. When all 13 books have been made, the player with the most books wins. Ties are shared.

Strategy tips
  • Remember what other players ask for. If Sam asked for 9s, Sam holds at least one 9, so ask Sam when you draw a 9.
  • Ask the player who most recently received cards of a rank you hold. Those cards are still in their hand.
  • When you hold three of a rank, ask for it straight away before someone else completes the book by asking you.
  • Asking reveals what you hold, so if you have several ranks, start with the one other players already know about.
  • When the stock is nearly empty, focus on asking players rather than hoping for a lucky draw.
Example: one turn
Mia holds two 5s and a King. She asks Leo for 5s, and he hands over one 5, so Mia now has three and asks again. She asks Ava for 5s, and Ava says "Go Fish!" Mia draws a 5 from the pond, the rank she asked for, so she shows it, lays down a book of four 5s and takes another turn.

Frequently asked questions

Can you ask for a card you don't have in Go Fish?

No. You must already hold at least one card of the rank you ask for. Asking for a rank you do not have is not allowed.

Do you get another turn if you draw the card you asked for?

Yes. If you are told "Go Fish" and the card you draw is the rank you just asked for, show it and go again. Any other card ends your turn.

Do you have to give all your cards of that rank?

Yes. The asked player must hand over every card of the requested rank, not just one. Holding cards back is cheating.

What happens when you run out of cards in Go Fish?

Under standard rules, on your next turn draw one card from the stock and ask for that rank. Some players instead draw a fresh hand of 5, or 7 with 2 or 3 players. If the stock is empty too, you are out and the others continue.

When does Go Fish end?

On this sheet the game ends when all 13 books are made. Some groups instead stop when the stock runs out or a player empties their hand. Agree before you start, and the most books wins either way.

How do you play Go Fish with very young children?

Try the Pairs variant: collect two of a kind instead of four. It speeds up the game and suits players as young as 4, who can match pairs before they can track four cards.
