About Free Lawn Mowing SOP

Free printable lawn mowing SOP for landscaping crews: deck height by grass type, the one-third rule, mowing pattern, edging, trim, and blow-off, with quality checklist and sign-off.

How to use

  1. Read the full procedure top to bottom before the work — the SOP runs in order and each step builds on the last.
  2. Toggle Ink-saver (black & white) for a cheaper mono print for the truck binder; leave it off for the full-color version.
  3. Click Print SOP to print or save as PDF. Print one per crew, laminate it for the job binder, or attach it to the job in your scheduling system.
  4. Train new hires on it and have crews sign off. Found something out of date for your region or equipment? Use the feedback link — flagged SOPs are re-researched against the source list.

Frequently asked questions

What cutting height should a lawn be mowed at?
It depends on the grass type. Cool-season grasses (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, ryegrass) are mowed at 2.5-3.5 inches, toward the higher end in summer heat and drought; warm-season grasses are lower (bermudagrass 1-2 inches, zoysiagrass 2-3 inches). Taller heights grow deeper roots and shade out weeds, so cut higher when unsure. Set the deck, then measure the actual cut height on a hard surface, since deck settings vary by machine.
What is the one-third rule for mowing?
Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. Removing more stresses the plant, exposes soil to weeds, and weakens the roots. If a lawn is overgrown, raise the deck and bring it down over two or more visits a few days apart rather than scalping it in one pass.
Should grass clippings be bagged or left on the lawn?
When you mow on a regular schedule, leave the mulched clippings on the lawn (grasscycling) — they break down quickly, return nutrients, and do not cause thatch. Bag or collect only when the lawn is overgrown, wet, or clumping, or when the client requires collection.
