About Free String Trimming & Edging SOP
Free printable string trimming and edging SOP for lawn crews: trim after mowing at the mow height, protect trees from line damage, and cut clean, consistent, vertical edges.
How to use
- Read the full procedure top to bottom before the work — the SOP runs in order and each step builds on the last.
- Toggle Ink-saver (black & white) for a cheaper mono print for the truck binder; leave it off for the full-color version.
- Click Print SOP to print or save as PDF. Print one per crew, laminate it for the job binder, or attach it to the job in your scheduling system.
- Train new hires on it and have crews sign off. Found something out of date for your region or equipment? Use the feedback link — flagged SOPs are re-researched against the source list.
Frequently asked questions
Should you trim or mow first?
Mow first, then trim and edge. Trimming and edging after the mow lets you clear clippings and overhang in one motion, and you can match the trim height to the freshly mowed turf so the lawn reads as one even surface.
How do you keep a string trimmer from damaging trees?
Trimmer line cutting the bark girdles and slowly kills trees. Keep the line off trunks: where a mulch ring exists trim to the ring (not the trunk), and around bare trunks leave a small grass collar and hand-trim or use a guard rather than scalping to the bark.
