About Snake Game
Play the classic Snake game free online. Guide the snake, eat food, grow longer, and beat your high score. Arrow keys, WASD, and mobile touch controls. No ads, no sign-up.
How to use
- Pick a speed before you start: Slow for warming up, Normal for the classic feel, Fast for serious score chasing. Speed escalates every 5 foods eaten regardless of starting tier, so even Slow gets fast at high scores — pick the speed that's comfortable to start, not where you'd like to finish.
- Tap Start Game or press any arrow key to begin. The snake spawns length 3 in the center of a 20x20 grid moving right. Desktop: arrow keys or WASD; Spacebar pauses. Mobile: swipe across the canvas in any direction, or use the on-screen D-pad below the board. Tapping the canvas also toggles pause.
- Eat the red food to grow one segment and add a point. Score and length stay tied — when your snake hits length 50, the board is one-third full and the strategic shift kicks in: you stop chasing food directly and start chasing food via the path that doesn't trap your tail.
- Hug the walls early. While your snake is short, run laps around the perimeter — this leaves the entire interior open for food spawns and trains your peripheral attention on the head, not the body. Most beginner deaths happen because the player stares at the food and not at where their head is going.
- Once the snake reaches roughly 30 segments, switch to a serpentine pattern: run all the way across one row, drop one cell, run all the way back, drop one cell, and repeat. This 'lawnmower' path systematically covers the board without ever crossing your own body and is how high scorers reach length 100+.
- Never reverse instantly into yourself — pressing Left while moving Right is silently ignored, but pressing Up-then-Left while you're touching your own neck above is suicide. When you need to U-turn, give yourself a 2-cell buffer: turn 90 degrees, advance one cell, then turn 90 degrees again.
- Your high score saves to localStorage and persists across sessions, but only on this browser/device. The stats panel tracks games played, best score, and total food eaten — Reset Stats wipes them if you want a clean leaderboard, otherwise just hit Play Again after a crash.
Frequently asked questions
How do you play Snake?
Snake is a classic arcade game where you control a snake moving around a grid. Use arrow keys, WASD, or swipe gestures to change direction. The snake moves continuously in its current direction. Eat the red food that appears on the grid to grow longer and score points. The game ends if the snake hits a wall or its own body. Your goal is to eat as much food as possible and achieve the highest score.
What controls does Snake support?
Multiple control schemes are supported for every device. On desktop, use the arrow keys or WASD keys to change the snake's direction. Press spacebar to pause and resume. On mobile, swipe in any direction on the game canvas, or use the on-screen directional pad (D-pad) buttons below the canvas. Tapping the canvas also toggles pause. Both swipe and D-pad work simultaneously.
What are the speed modes?
Three speed modes let you customize the difficulty. Slow mode is perfect for casual play or beginners learning the mechanics. Normal mode offers the classic Snake experience with balanced speed. Fast mode is a serious challenge for experienced players, requiring quick reflexes and careful planning. Regardless of the starting speed, the game accelerates every 5 foods eaten, so even Slow mode gets intense at high scores.
How does scoring work?
You earn one point for each food eaten. The snake grows by one segment with each food, making navigation progressively harder. Every 5 foods the game speed increases slightly, adding another layer of challenge. Your high score is saved locally in your browser so it persists between sessions. The stats panel also tracks total games played, best score, and total food eaten across all games.
Can I play Snake on my phone?
Yes, the game is fully optimized for mobile play. The canvas scales to fit your screen, and you can control the snake using swipe gestures directly on the game area or with the on-screen directional buttons that appear automatically on touch devices. Tap the canvas to pause and resume.
